Tottenham 0-1 Everton LIVE! Premier League result, latest news and reaction as Spurs lose

Everton made a statement of intent that maybe this is the year they can crack the Premier League top six with an impressive 1-0 win at Tottenham.

Carlo Ancelotti has been backed in the transfer market as the Toffees finally try and compete at the top end of the division and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's second-half header got them off to a winning start.

It was a slick and polished display which saw Everton completely outplay their hosts. An afternoon to forget for Spurs, who were well below par and will struggle to take any positives out of the game.

And on this evidence Jose Mourinho has a bigger challenge than Ancelotti on his hands to finish in the top six, especially considering his side have a gruelling schedule over the next couple of months.

Dan Kilpatrick is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today, and he – alongside Matt Davies – will bring you all the action from north London.

Mourinho on Doherty

"The players who didn't have pre-season, we don't have now the possibility to give them a pre-season but we have a lot of matches now to play consecutively and we have to use these matches, not just to win them and the knockout ones are obviously decisive ones with everything decided in 120 minutes or even penalties, and try to use this to improve the form of some players because some of them were really in trouble.

"You can look to Doherty, a player who is normally in incredible condition. He didn't have pre-season. He went direct from holidays to national team matches.

"No pre-season at all. Direct and not one single training session, direct from holidays to national team and he played two consecutive matches and today he was not Matt Doherty like he normally is.

"So these are the things that we knew could happen to us."

Mourinho on a lack of pre-season

"Technically it was not so easy because some players didn't have a pre-season for different reasons. We had two days with everybody. Two days before the game is not where you can work too much.

"The goal shouldn't be possible when you have six referees and VAR - to let a free-kick be taken five or six metres in front because it's a huge difference.

"I'm disappointed with my team. My message is inside [the dressing room]. I'm so happy no more Amazon because these things can stay in between us."

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho to BBC Sport

"What happened after the goal with them having more chances is a consequence of conceding the goal and not such good fitness condition from some players.

"What happened before the goal was a good game. We had two incredible situations and two good saves from Jordan Pickford. We didn't score. The game was open.

"In the second half one goal made a difference in the result and what happened after the goal.

"Against good teams like Everton if you let them play from the back they are comfortable with very good technical players. If you don't press them you give them ammunition.

"We were lazy in our pressing. That is a consequence of bad fitness, bad pre-season. Some players didn't even have a pre-season. Some players had a wrong state of mind. I don't want to speak about it - I'm not sure about iag

Dominic Calvert-Lewin speaking to BBC Sport:

"A very good start. We were looking to start well and build with a strong tempo. Scoring is what I'm here to do. When you score and get the three points I'm happy.

"We've not long played together (with the new signings) so there's more to come."

On coach and former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson:

"He's been someone I can bounce questions off. He has my best interests at heart. I have a lot to thank him for and if I need to ask him things he's always there.

"You look at the quality that's come in, it's an instant uplift. As a centre forward you look at the creativity - they've played at the top level. There should be chances this season and I need to be there.

"It was most important to get momentum today. We wanted to make a statement. It's important we don't get carried away, it's something to build on."

Abdoulaye Doucoure told Sky Sports

"It's a dream start for all of us. We worked very hard today and the manager was focused on this game. We're very happy to collect the win. We've not had long to work, I've only had three train sessions but I've kept my condition and I've got a good physical shape. The manager has a lot of trust in me."

In the end, that was a thoroughly disappointing first game for Jose Mourinho and Spurs, who are in 17th place after the loss.

We'll bring you the reaction from Mourinho and the players, so stay tuned...

Philosophy of Jesus Christ

Philosophy of Jesus Christ     by   Damien F. Mackey   The Philosophy of Jesus Christ - restoring Christian philosophy to its biblical roots, with Jesus Christ, Wisdom Incarnate, as the focal point. The Fathers of the Church rightly recognised the profound influence of Hebrew wisdom, the Bible, upon the Greco-Roman world. As‘Salvation is of the Jews’, so is Wisdom. “Jesusappealed to God’s previous revelation in the Hebrew Scriptures (Matt. 5:17–19; John 10:31) and issued authoritative revelations of His own as God Incarnate”. … Jesus reasoned carefully about the things that matter most — a handy definition of philosophy. His teachings, in fact, cover the basic topics of philosophy. …. “As an apologist for God’s truth, He defended the truth of the Hebrew Scriptures as well as His own teachings and actions” (Fr. Anthony Zimmerman).     Introduction   The consideration of Jesus Christ as a philosopher is not entirely new...

God Said, “Go”

I  gave my heart to Jesus today. It’s a sentence I want to exhale every night as I crawl into bed and close my eyes. I want to slumber knowing that I gave my soul to my Savior. I want to wake knowing that my life is the Lord’s from sunrise to sunset. In a world spinning in sin, I want it to be well with my soul. I know that means forgiving mistakes and mountains made out of molehills. It means bended knees and surrendered will. I seek to trust Him. I’ve learned that life isn’t easy, inside faith or out. But choosing to be “in” is key. I’m all in. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). * Life on the Road I drove six hours round trip every weekend for much of 2012 and early 2013. My daughter and I lived out of suitcases, spending five-day weeks in one town and two-day weekends at another. We left recipes, toys, refrigerator notes, familiar beds, and the family room and set out for the schoo...
